Off-Ledger Currency

First and foremost, it must be understood that the term, “Off-Ledger Currency” pertains to all currencies. In general, this is a currency that can be used but was not created for a digital wallet. With consideration to cryptocurrencies, an Off-Ledger Currency is also a term used to describe money being spent by nation states, (i.e. the U.S. Dollar, the Japanese Yen, and the Euro).

The Euro, is probably the best example of an Off-Ledger Currency as it was created as a unified, single currency for all of Europe. And while it was not invented with eWallets in mind, the Euro is also accepted as payment for different eWallet providers.
